What Economic Downturn?

We went shopping yesterday. I was wanting to go to see Australia at the cinema, but the film is SO long, it would’ve depleted any chance to shop. So we just shopped.

I’ve been wanting to get slippers, so went into the cheapy shoe shop and they had some marked down to £2.49. That’ll do me! So I got myself a pair. Em’s been wanting Wellington’s so she could work on the allotment site. The store had wellies, but not in her size. I asked at the counter did they have any in the Em’s size (size 9) and the girl says to me “they start at size 11”. WTF? She went on “unless you want the designer ones like Disney or Spongebob” then I was like – in my head going “Oh, she must have thought I meant kiddies sizes” I said “No, I mean mens sizes” – and she just looked at me and said “Yeah”, then said “Oh, you’ve got two left slippers, hold on” and walked off to get my right slipper. When she came back, she didn’t pick up where she left off, so I’m STILL none the wiser if they were any size 9 mens wellies. I can’t imagine they’d have 8’s and 10’s but no 9’s! It left my rather perplexed. I’m sure she never had a second thought about it. How DO people like that get jobs?

Anyway, on to Debenhams. Where I had two missions. One – to find some nice new towels – hopefully marked down in the sales. Success, yay!! Two lovely Christy towels marked down to half price. I was happy with those. The other was to find a Radley purse. Unlike when we got to the homewears bit and there were towels aplenty to chose from, the Radley purse section had been WIPED OUT! There were like 3 purses left and none of them took my fancy. There were more Foirelli bags than you could shake a stick at by comparison though. All these years being a Foirelli girl, but none of them really took my fancy, and most weren’t even discounted anyway.

So, that’s why I ask, what economic downturn? Certain swathes of Debenhams had been completely wiped out! It was insane!

After that we went to HMV, but no DVD’s took my fancy and not many things were marked down.

Then on to Wilkinsons. Just bit and bobs from there. Restocking of food for the birds and little things like that.

Into WH Smith to find a Playboy alarm clock, but it wasn’t there. Playboy I hear you say? Yes, but not from some weird kinkiness, but because the clock face is meant to have hands that glow in the dark. It’s a long story which I might write about in a future post. Suffice it to say, we lucked out.

Lastly to Maplin’s to get some DVD+R’s. That was it, shopping done. Me with a broken back and aching feet. I SO need to lose weight. Here comes a resolution!

I’ve Seen 85 Films In A List Of 244.

SUPPOSEDLY if you’ve seen over 85 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you’ve seen. There are 244 films on this list. Copy this list, to do it yourself. List it on your own blog, etc. Then, put x’s next to the films you’ve seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun.

Much Better.

That was a bad day the other day. I felt awful. I’m feeling much better now. Thank goodness. I’d been a bit worried about myself there. Thankfully it was just a pre-Christmas bump.

Just finished the last of the online food shop. That gets delivered tomorrow. I had to scoot around the other day when Gilly took us to Letchworth to get a mock (vegetarian) turkey roll from Holland and Barrett. Flippin’ £4.25 it cost! It’ll barely feed me and Em. Just enough for both of us.

I’m totally splurging on nice food this year. We had a bleak Xmas last year, so this one will be special. And we’ve got alcohol too! I got a bottle of Disaronno from Morrisons the other day (almond liqueur, like marzipan) and I’ve also got a bottle of Midori (melon liqueur) coming and a couple of packs of snowballs (advocaat mixer).

Sssooo looking forward to the Doctor Who Christmas special. I’m counting down the day to Xmas by the number of days left before I get to see the special! That’s bad!

I’ve got plans to go and see Australia at the cinema as well. I saw the Newsnight Review on the BBC and it was slated by Germaine Greer and other members on the review panel. It sounded SO bad, it’s good!

Just a little bit of bits and bobs today.

Laters…

Hit The Wall

I’m having a bad day today. I’ve hit the pre-Christmas wall. I now want Christmas over with. I just don’t have the enthusiasm and the energy for it any longer. I just want my shopping done, the stuff on TV that I want to watch now! I’m just over it.

I’m having a real “2006” day. Two years ago I was going through a very deep depression. Not something I’d ever gone through before. Despite having long spells of living in poverty, I’ve always been scarily optimistic. So 2006 really came from nowhere. I just couldn’t see the point any more. But it was like that, every day, for at least 6 months.

I still have those feelings on the odd day. It’s just more of a “feel sorry for myself” day now when that happens. Today is one of those days. I just want to mope. Just lay on the bed in the foetal position and forget about the world for a while.

In 2006 I used to have quite big philosophical questions for myself and others. Why *are* we here? Are we meant to be here? Aren’t we just a virus invading a place that’s not rightfully ours? Why do we treat animals so inferior? Environmental conservation?! What a laugh! If we weren’t here f*cking up the earth in the first place, we wouldn’t have to be doing “conservation” work – I say, typing it into my netbook!!

The world is just full of contradictions, hypocrisy and chaos.

Then I think things like “What drives a person in say, DR Congo, or the Darfur region, or even Zimbabwe to continue on? What *IS* the point of it? Please, please, really tell me?

Media_http1bpblogspot_oqlkh

In the absolute grand scheme of things, what do we, as humans, contribute to anything? That we leave a mark (more like scar, and a deep scar at that)? That we get remembered for achievements? So, we’ve gone to the moon…SO?! What of it? Big fat hairy deal. What does it matter that I know Einstein? What did he prove? Why is it important that I know that Henry VIII lived and had six wives?

What makes these things important when we still have wars, we are still animals – lesser animals than the ones we like to “lord it” over! We’re just a mutant virus. We shouldn’t even be here.

Then there’s things like religion. Just do *not* get me started there.

I know. It’s all very “It’s A Wonderful Life” the way I’m talking. But seriously, that movie is fantasy. What WAS so important about George Bailey’s life? Oh sure, he saves his brother’s life – who then in turn saves the lives of people in war – but his brother saved peoples lives IN WAR! I mean, FFS, we STILL have war! The human race is just ridiculous.

I just don’t get stuff…I really don’t.

Yes, it’s a bad day…

Was That A Kite?

Yes, but not THAT kind of kite! It was one of THESE kind of kites!

Media_http1bpblogspot_fgbip

I saw it as we got near to our place. We’d just been shopping with Em’s dad, and were in the last half a mile home and I saw it circling around. Not THAT particular kite mind you, but one just as spectacular. What a sight to see.

It was HUGE!

Ausrock – The Blog of Rare Australian Music.

I was looking at Google Reader through the few blogs I follow on there. The thing is, I rarely remember to go there and look at the blog updates. The more important blogs I read, I’ve got linked to my own blog – except one, that I forgot I was following until I returned to Google Reader today.

It’s called Ausrock and it has a WEALTH of hard-to-find and rare Australian and New Zealand music on it with downloadable content – which is the BEST bonus of all when it comes to rare finds!

Anyway, thought I’d mention it and link. To view the site, go here:

No Ice Cream?

I had a dream in the early hours of this morning. I had the distinct feeling I was at home, but the visuals in the dream had me located at my mums house. It was late at night, around 11.30pm. Em and I were watching something on TV. Something caught my eye out the window – it was an ice cream van. A very modern one – quite posh (for an ice cream van!). A person had just been served and was walking away from the van.

I popped my head out the front door and asked the man how much longer he’d be around. “Oh, for a while yet” he said. I thought “great” and continued watching the TV. Once I was ready to get an ice cream, I thought I’d better check he was still outside. I asked him another question, which I can’t remember now, then said “I’ll just be a minute”. I’d only been in a t-shirt and knickers so needed to get some trousers on before heading outside.

I quickly go to the bedroom, get some trousers on and walk out the door to the van. As I’m doing this, the man pulls down the shutter to the van, starts the engine and starts to drive off. I’m calling out saying “Wait! I’m coming to buy something now!” He says “Too late. I waited long enough. I’m off”. I just stood there dumbfounded, watching him drive off – disappointed. Damn you ice cream man!!
